During a public meeting held yesterday, the New York State Cannabis Control Board approved the first 36 marijuana retail dispensary licenses to be issued in the state. The licenses will be granted to New York State providers, nonprofits, and entrepreneurs. These first licenses are expected to be fully operational by the end of the year.
The Office of Cannabis Management said the top class of licensees was selected from 903 applications. Applicants are required to have a significant presence in New York. They must also verify that they are in compliance with the state’s marijuana laws. A $200 million fund will be created to help these businesses get up and running quickly.
The first group of retail dispensaries is expected to open in December. The first dispensaries approved will sell cannabis produced by New York farmers.
Hemp Farmers Want Clarity On When Dispensaries Will Open To Market
Despite a two-year delay, New York State is on the verge of legalizing cannabis for adult use. But how does the state plan to get the industry off the ground?

The law also allows conditionally licensed hemp farmers to plant one acre of high-THC cannabis for recreational use. The law also requires these farmers to participate in a social equity mentorship program.
New York State Issued Its First 36 Cannabis Dispensary Licenses
During a Monday meeting, New York state regulators announced the first 36 cannabis dispensary licenses. Eight of the licenses are for nonprofits. The rest are for individual businesses. These new retailers are expected to open at least one store by the end of the year. The state hopes to distribute 175 licenses in total.
Of the 36 licenses, 28 went to individuals with prior marijuana convictions. Others went to groups of “justice-involved” individuals. These nonprofits will need to have a track record of helping formerly incarcerated individuals re-enter society.
Of the six businesses awarded licenses on Long Island, three will be located in Queens. Three others will be in the Bronx. The remaining four businesses will be in Manhattan.
The New York Social Equity Cannabis Investment Fund will provide loans to support the business expenses of the nonprofits. The funds will also help lease the facilities. The first dispensaries are expected to open by December.
